Breaking silos through a unique shared language
Coppel is a Mexican company in the market for over 80 years. It offers various services, including e-commerce, department credit, retirement funds, and banking.
Our collaboration focused on reimagining the experience for one of their core tools, their intranet. As part of the project, we created Coltrane: Coppel Group’s Design Language System with the strategy to nurture, manage, and extend its use within the organization.
About
The initiative to redesign an isolated product highlighted the need for an internal design system, which became a much larger effort: a DLS (Design Language System) for the whole Organization.
We joined Coppel’s looking-to-shatter-paradigms revolutionaries in their quest to design experiences with consistency, simplicity, and fun. Helping them dissolve silos and facilitating collaboration across product areas and business units.
Coppel is a leading Mexican retail company with a nationwide presence, employing over 113,000 collaborators. Despite having a shared objective of enhancing customer and collaborator experience, their product teams currently operate in silos, resulting in duplicated efforts and a failure to achieve their goal.
Challenge
We collaborated across the organization to understand the needs of various teams, gaining insights into internal processes, work dynamics, and ongoing initiatives. These diverse use cases challenged the development of a robust and adaptable system to meet their requirements.
With a shared strategic perspective, our team adopted an iterative learning, building, and testing approach throughout the DLS development.
The intranet served as the first Coltrane (Coppel Group’s Design Language System) use case, pivoting in fostering integration and collaboration between product teams and business units through a shared language. This successful integration paved the way for extending Coltrane's scope to other service platforms offered by Coppel.
Approach
We built Coltrane DLS, a jazz-inspired identity concept strategically designed to connect a set of design principles, a UI toolkit, and a component library that facilitates the integration and collaboration between the diverse teams and business units inside Coppel through a shared language. It allows product teams to create experiences with quality, usability, and consistency standards for collaborators and clients.
A hybrid governance model enables Brand and Practice leaders to bring their customers' needs to the table. Hence, DLS Management and Operations team can design and build the components needed to deliver extraordinary experiences. We delivered processes and workflows through an inspiring identity that seeks to spread a creative and collaborative spirit across the company.
Outcome
“This collaboration helped us create Group-level agreements that will improve the quality and maturity of our processes and products.”
