Building the
Next Generation
of New Literacy

About

McGraw Hill is a major provider of Literacy curriculums in the U.S. However, since the pandemic, the digitization of tools in the classroom has accelerated, and there is a growing need for literacy resources and tools that break the paradigm of the traditional textbook model to become more adapted to the blended and modern classroom.

Together with the McGraw Hill team, we defined a core literacy experience for teachers, creating a holistic view of the physical and digital touchpoints and designing the foundation of the digital experience.

Challenge

The McGraw Hill Literacy team requested help synthesizing and organizing their research and years of teachers' experience to develop a comprehensive multichannel journey map. The aim was to provide a holistic view of teachers' experiences.

This program focused on further developing the key scenario narratives, creating a macro and micro view of physical and digital touchpoints, and designing the foundation of the digital experience for teachers.

Approach

Throughout 13 weeks, we engaged in a series of stakeholder interviews, qualitative research, and collaborative workshops to comprehensively understand the teacher experience. By utilizing the insights gathered, we aimed to identify and address key pain points faced by teachers.

Working closely with the McGraw Hill team, they established crucial scenarios aligned with the overall journey, encompassing physical and digital realms. These efforts laid the groundwork for a digital experience that aims to enhance the teaching experience and simplify the tasks associated with teaching.

Outcome

Through the narrative lens of "Mrs. Vasquez's" daily experiences, we demonstrated the various stages she encountered throughout her teaching journey. This encompassed planning for the upcoming term, planning and preparing for the week ahead, engaging in live instruction, assessing the day, adapting the plan to meet students where they are, and personalizing learning for every learner.

With every step, we ensured that the storytelling narrative mapped back to the multichannel teacher experience, seamlessly blending the physical and digital aspects with an ultimate goal of simplifying the teaching process and making it more manageable for educators.

“We’ve spent an entire year talking internally about how to get to the macro experience, and I feel like we’ve finally arrived. Thank you to the team for helping us get there.”
